Turn It Up

Vanbot’s Four On The Floor

Yesterday Vanbot (aka Ester Ideskog) released her Remix EP. Though the title lacks a certain je ne sais quoi, this mini-collection of recasted tracks from her debut album offers further evidence that the Swedish DIY-er is one of pop music’s brightest new talents. Indeed, Vanbot’s self-titled LP is one of 2011’s best.

The pair of remixes that Vanbot premiered ahead of the EP’s release — Bremen’s pulsating, hands-in-the-air re-rub of “Bitter Is The Sweetest Part” (still a free download) and Fear Of Tigers‘ irresistible, synthtastic remix of “Lost Without You” — are the kind of club-friendly tracks one expects on such a set. But the other half of the Remix EP serves a different sort of dancefloor.

Christian Niva‘s remix of “Maybe” is a captivating exercise in Jamie xx-style minimalism, retaining the atmospheric feel of the album version while amping it up ever so slightly. Pulling back on the original Pet Shop Boys-like production of “Make Me, Break Me”, Hit’epa turns the tempo down too, successfully revamping Vanbot’s single into an epic, tension-filled drama.

Remix projects can be a dicey proposition. But here, Vanbot’s songs aren’t lost or broken when translated into these various environments. Her Remix EP proves that she’s not only a crafter of top-notch pop, but also aces at A&R-ing her own material, picking the right people to remix it. Hear here:
