Last weekend’s spring-forward switch to Daylight Savings Time disrupted my sleep routine, and I’ve yet to recover. Wide awake ’til the wee hours, I’ve been burning through shows I recorded on TiVo many moons ago.
On Monday night, I picked a episode of Vh1 Classic 120 Minutes, which among many other highlights featured both of the music videos from the Pretty In Pink soundtrack. The Psychedelic Furs’ title track was shown in the first hour, followed in the second by OMD’s “If You Leave.” The latter, produced by Stephen Hague, is just about near-perfect a tune as pop music gets.
Later that same year (1986), OMD released The Pacific Age, which marked the last album to feature the classic lineup of Andy McCluskey, Paul Humphreys, Martin Cooper, and Malcolm Holmes until the arrival of 2010’s History Of Modern. With the full foursome recording together under the OMD banner again, they’ve recaptured their hallmark synthpop sound from 25 years ago. Though such reunions can often come off as desperate or dodgy, History Of Modern is a welcome exception, sounding as if no time at all has passed (read more here and here).
After making music videos for singles “If You Want It” and “Sister Marie Says,” OMD chose a different tact for “History Of Modern (Part 1),” turning it into a contest and calling for entries. The winning clip was created by Sweden’s Lapantafilm, and premiered in mid-February. Here’s what the band said about their top selection:
“The sheer volume of work that has gone into this is incredible. So many different film animation styles. A very creative mixture of stop frame animation, modelling, drawing, film capture. A serious collection of OMD references… some of which are incredibly subtle, some not. The ideas are a varied and effective as the many different techniques. There were several really strong entries but this is the clear winner.”
“The History Of Modern (Pt. 1)” single, brimming with mixes, b-sides, and a cover of The xx’s “VCR,” arrived last week.
OMD is midway through their current North American tour. For a list of remaining dates, click here. After that, the band told Billboard that it plans to “reinvent the future again” on their next album.
