Video Premiere

A game changer

Have you heard Cut Copy‘s “Need You Now”? No, the synthpop quartet hasn’t covered Lady Antebellum’s Grammy-winning Song and Record of the Year. Twin tunes in title only, “Need You Now” is Cut Copy’s latest single, taken from their new album, Zonoscope.

The comparisons to New Order and OMD aren’t new, and there’s no escaping them on “Need You Now” (an emphasis on the latter over the former). But the Melbourne band also adopts a definite U2 vibe on the song, especially as it rounds the bend and some female gospel harmonies briefly surface. After never quite committing to Cut Copy, with “Need You Now” I’ve found the sound I’ve been looking for.

The music video for “Need You Now” premiered today, directed by Keith Schofield. Saying the clip exists in a league of its own is not off the mark:

The opening track on Zonoscope, nothing else that follows is quite like “Need You Now,” with Cut Copy culling from a stack of retro sources. Last summer’s teaser single, “Where I’m Going,” combined The Beach Boys, The Who, and power-pop, while proper first single, “Take Me Over,” pointed to both Fleetwood Mac and Men At Work on the way to its disco paradise. Other tracks reference Chicago house and psychedelic rock.

Cut Copy clearly prefers to play the musical field, but of them all, “Need You Now” is the song I’ve got playing on repeat. It’s such a well-crafted number that, just as Lady Antebellum broke through with their same-named song, Cut Copy’s “Need You Now” could be the band’s ticket to playing in the big leagues.
