Having released his sophomore album Heartbreak On Vinyl nearly a month ago, American Idol Season 6 runner-up Blake Lewis is now out with the second single from the set, the title track.

The “Heartbreak On Vinyl” video premiered on the New York Post‘s PopWrap yesterday, with Lewis saying he was inspired to write the song after the Virgin Megastore he frequented in New York City was shuttered. As an obsessed musichead who still mourns the loss of Tower Records (1960-2006), Lewis’ tale immediately won me over before I’d ever heard a single note. So even better, then, that “Heartbreak On Vinyl” is a track worth cueing up again and again. The song’s propellant (and spot-on) ’80s-inspired synths and guitars provide a huge hook for repeated listening, but Lewis’ relationship-as-record-shop lyrics are equally compelling.

Paying homage to these vinyl palaces (and true, some exist even today), the “Heartbreak On Vinyl” video strings together clips from movies like Pretty In Pink, Empire Records, and High Fidelity, in which record shops figured prominently in the plot. As Lewis sings, I wish we could just go back there tonight:
