In anticipation of their new remix collection coming June 6 (read more about Remixes 2: 81-11), Depeche Mode have delivered something unexpected, a new music video to accompany the Stargate Remix of 1990’s “Personal Jesus.”
No member of the synthpop group appears in the clip, a retro trip that revisits the Puritan-era preoccupation with witch-hunts, particularly the water-related punishment reserved for the accused. As you’ll see, hell hath no fury like a woman wrongly drowned. It burns, it burns!
Last Friday in Los Angeles, Depeche Mode frontman Dave Gahan was feted at the annual MusiCares MAP fundraiser by Steven Tyler, Chester Bennington (Linkin Park), and Jane’s Addiction, given the Stevie Ray Vaughan award for his sobriety and help to the music community. Gahan performed a 35-minute set of covers at the event, including Joy Division’s “Love Will Tear Us Apart,” wrapping with a surprise appearance by his Depeche Mode bandmate Martin Gore, who joined him for “Personal Jesus.”
Purchase Depeche Mode – “Personal Jesus” (Stargate Remix) via iTunes, Amazon MP3. A full single with additional mixes is out 5/30.
