Being An Adult Is No Day At The Beach

What a drag it is getting old.

The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart sure had a different outlook on life as kids, at least according to the indie-pop band’s new video for “The Body,” from their most-excellent album, Belong.

Each member is shown in the present day as a numbed adult, intercut with flashbacks to a mini-me version of themselves enjoying a carefree day at the beach. The juxtaposition is a fitting treatment for a song whose chorus goes, “Tell me again what the body’s for, ’cause I can’t feel it anymore.”

Musically, “The Body” is equipped with a fantastic synthpop sheen that has rocketed it to the top of my current go-to tunes. Produced by Flood and mixed by Alan Moulder, The Pains’ latest single plays like a brighter take on classic New Order, the sonic equivalent of how nostalgia tricks us into thinking the past was more smiley-faced than it really was.
