Just ahead of the 4th of July holiday, Florence + The Machine delivers a new music video celebrating their time criss-crossing these United States while on tour.
Lensed in a handheld Super 8 style, “Breaking Down” offers a gauzy glimpse into what Florence Welch and her mates got up to during their downtime. They lounge poolside. They take in a Mardi Gras celebration. They play doubles tennis. They revel in the lights of Las Vegas.
Old Glory scores several cameos, not only in original flag form, waving in the breeze, but also as pinwheel and football. Consider “Breaking Down” the much sunnier complement to Lana Del Rey’s “National Anthem” video, which had a similar retro feel but a much darker finish. Frequent Florence + The Machine collaborator Tabitha Denholm directs.
And no your eyes don’t deceive you. That neon sign does not, in fact, say “Cocktails,” but exactly the naughty combo you thought it did.
