Bright Light Bright Light Goes Reeling In The Tears

Bright Light Bright Light has premiered a music video for his forthcoming single “Disco Moment.” Scheduled for released in August, the song will serve as the U.S. debut of Rod Thomas’ one-man synthpop project from the UK.

“It’s semi-autobiographical,” Thomas tells The Guardian. I wanted to write a song that sounded like the big emotional dance scene in a John Hughes film –- euphoric but also a bit sad. A ‘disco moment’ is that time you have when you’re having the time of your life, like when your favourite song comes on in a club, or when everything feels amazing and you’re like ‘Life is great!’ and the song is about watching someone you’re meant to be close to have that moment in front of you, but you’re not included.”

Bright Light Bright Light’s “Disco Moment” is a twin brother to Robyn’s “Dancing On My Own,” another first-person bit of heartbreak beat. If two’s a trend, here’s a tip for all those lonely hearts lurking in the shadows with eyes locked upon the dance floor: Consider directing your attention to the left and right. Seems the perimeter is packed with potential replacement mates (or at least shoulders to shed tears upon).

Populated by TV-headed extras with changing faces and expressions, Bright Light Bright Light’s “Disco Moment” video has an art-installation vibe. There’s some crying involved, but eschews any club connection by including not a single step of choreography.

Bright Light Bright Light – “Disco Moment” is out August 7.
