I’m writing this post from Iowa, where, subjected to terrestrial radio without alternative, I’ve managed to hear all six singles from Katy Perry‘s Teenage Dream exactly one time each in the span of 24 hours. Yes, even “E.T.,” though it wasn’t the remix with Kanye West’s rap, which I assume was deemed too risqué for this particular section of the Midwest.
This Teenage Dream-athon marked the first time I’d actually heard the sixth and current single, “The One That Got Away,” played outside of my iPod. As someone who wasn’t exactly excited by Perry’s final pick from her album, I was surprised at just how good it sounds coming out of a car stereo. Maybe she’ll snare that sixth #1 and make Billboard chart history after all (“The One That Got Away” rises to #18 this week).
As it turns out, today Perry premiered the music video for “The One That Got Away,” directed by Floria Sigismondi. The singer (unconvincingly) packs on the old-age makeup for this doomed-love story in which Diego Luna (Y Tu Mamá También) stars as the title character. I admit I was surprisingly moved by the clip’s turn of events.
