The pop gods must be smiling down upon me, as the release of a new music video provides a chance to feature an artist whose 2011 output has heretofore gone unmentioned on Popservations.
In June, Patrick Wolf released Lupercalia, the English-Irish singer-songwriter’s fifth album. Lupercalia is all about celebrating L-O-V-E, and it’s not hard to fall head over heels for Wolf’s assemblage of new tunes, enraptured by its infectious spell.
Now Wolf has debuted the music video for “Together,” the fourth single from Lupercalia and the album’s most emotionally cathartic moment (i.e. high drama). Wolf asks for his partner’s forgiveness as the synth-centric track grows in its insistence, finally flowering into something quite epic-sounding (a string section and angelic female vocals help in this regard). Perhaps not surprisingly for a song with such a cinematic end-titles feel, Wolf finds the final month of the year is the exact right time to share “Together” with the masses:
“‘Together’ has been the highlight of the live shows over the last year. The audience reaction to this song has been totally inspiring,” he says, adding, “I always saw it as a song about two lovers reuniting in the dark rainy days around December.”
Directed by Mattias Erik Johansson, the “Together” music video uses symmetry to represent coming together and splitting apart, with Wolf reuniting with himself (not a euphemism) in the colorful clip. He also dons some fabulous costumes that incorporate taxidermied wildlife — a pair of wolves, naturally, and a single falcon perched upon his shoulder:
