Florence’s Cutting Overflow

March 7, 2012 1 Comment

In “What The Water Gave Me,” Florence Welch intones, “Let the only sound be the overflow.” But the kind of overflow shown in the new music video for Florence + The Machine’s next Ceremonials single, “Never Let Me Go,” looks to be the kind that requires an emergency plumber.

Set in an abandoned ice rink, the clip is directed by longtime Florence + The Machine collaborator Tabitha Denholm and stars a raven-haired Welch and actor Jamie Campbell Bower (Twilight, Harry Potter). With various other elements at play, including some nefarious foam, “Never Let Me Go” plays like the twisted sequel to The Cutting Edge that we never asked for.

Perhaps I shouldn’t have seen this news story, which is coloring my impression of what goes down.

Best to let this making-of video explain what’s behind “Never Let Me Go.” Matters of appropriate visual accompaniment aside, the song remains a gorgeous, swoonworthy standout from Ceremonials.
