Purple Crush, the husband-and-wife duo whose ’80s-soaked electro sounds led to behind-the-scenes production work on tracks for Lady Gaga, Greyson Chance, and Little Boots, plus remix projects for Far East Movement, Natalia Kills, and Midnight Red, are back up front, serving up some new music that’s all theirs.
“Sweat,” a more muscular take on early Madonna, which wouldn’t sound out of place on Confessions On A Dance Floor — or Lady Gaga’s Born This Way, come to think of it — was released at the start of summer, and now Purple Crush have posted the single’s music video. Though a glitterball appears in the clip, the “Sweat” video isn’t a typical dancefloor exercise, as Isla Cheadle and Air Jared have already been there, done that. Instead they took a less expected tack for their track’s visual accompaniment. “We wanted to show our process more, like how do we rehearse, what is it like to show the making of the performance, the transformation,” Cheadle tells Popservations.
“The concept behind the song ‘Sweat’ was that I actually sweat a lot when i perform and dance, and i used to be so embarrassed by my sweat stains,” Cheadle says. “So why not celebrate it instead?” With wide swaths of the U.S. still experiencing record heat, it’s pretty easy to heed Purple Crush’s call to take it off and let the body detox.
Plus, hearing blistering guitar back in pop music again is getting me all hot and bothered. Work it, work it, work it, work it…
Cheadle says more new music from Purple Crush is coming soon, with the duo prepping their new Welcome 2 The Underground EP for a fall release. That’s about the time when San Francisco rides its own mini heatwave, so while the Bay Area is breezy now compared to the rest of the country, we’ll be set to get our sweat on all over again.
