‘Girl Gone’ Words

A fixture of the pop world for nearly three decades, one would imagine there aren’t many firsts left for Madonna. What hasn’t she done? Well, today brought one: the debut of her first official lyrics video.

“Girl Gone Wild” is the second single from MDNA, Madonna’s forthcoming 12th studio album, due March 26. It follows the M.I.A. and Nicki Minaj-featuring “Give Me All Your Luvin’,” which plummeted 10-39 on the Billboard Hot 100 (ringing up LMFAO for a remix didn’t help much). With the buzz of Madonna’s showstopping Super Bowl performance now behind her, the real push behind MDNA has begun, including preparations for a world tour that’s selling out fast (today’s the day I attempt to get tix).

“Girl Gone Wild” is one of two tracks on MDNA written by Vancouver-based songwriter Jenson Vaughn (Alex Gaudino/Kelly Rowland’s club banger “What A Feeling”) and produced by Benny Benassi (“Satisfaction”) and his cousin Alle. This Billboard article explains how it all came to be.

Very “Celebration,” no? Ahead of her time, as always, since this sound is now au courant. I’ve got that burnin’ hot desire…

There’s a bit more of “Girl Gone Wild” to love on MDNA. The album version opens with Madonna revisiting her past by reciting part of the Act Of Contrition, a prayer familiar to Catholics (devout and lapsed alike) and fans of the singer’s 1989 masterpiece, Like A Prayer, as it was the centerpiece of the album’s closing track.

Madonna’s currently filming a proper music video for “Girl Gone Wild,” directed by fashion photographers Mert Alas & Marcus Piggott. The pair also shot the MDNA album images and the photos that accompanied Madonna’s chat with Gus Van Sant in the May 2010 issue of Interview magazine.
