Canadian electro-rocker Diamond Rings (aka John O’Regan) is back with “I’m Just Me,” the lead single from his sophomore effort due this fall on Astralwerks.
Diamond Rings’ debut album, 2010’s Special Affections, was enjoyable enough, if a bit one-note. Now with co-producer Damian Taylor (Björk, Austra) adding some polish to that earlier promise, “I’m Just Me” previews a fuller, more intense sound for the gender-bending musician’s second time around. That artistic progression is supported by lyrics like, “Now I’m growing older, I’m getting bolder, confident in my own skin.” The orbiting middle eight sparkles, adding heft to the introspective moment — an instance of repetition being employed to a song’s advantage.
The music video for “I’m Just Me” was directed by Jared Raab. With Diamond Rings dressed in jackets sporting the most exaggerated shoulders seen outside of Dynasty‘s heyday, the clip features the best use of green lasers since Jennifer Lopez’s “Waiting For Tonight” and plenty of voguing.
