When I Am A Camera released their fantastic, industrial-tinged cover of Pet Shop Boys’ “Rent” in April, the UK duo promised that a new single, “The Legendary Children,” wasn’t too far away.
“The Legendary Children” ultimately arrived in late June, the equivalent of a pal saying they’ll be at your place in five minutes, only to find yourself waiting a full 10 to 15. But just as that’s little reason to end a friendship, two months wasn’t a terribly long wait for new music from I Am A Camera (though should we ever need to pencil in future plans with Francesca Ross and Ian Watt, we’ve got some idea as to how they approach the calendar).
Like I Am A Camera’s 2012 single, “Factory Boys,” which was inspired by the story of the Dupont twins and their Studio 54 benefactor Andy Warhol, “The Legendary Children” also shares a connection to gay history, if a more implicit one this time through.
As famously depicted in the 1991 documentary, Paris Is Burning, the highest honor bequeathed upon drag-ball participants was ‘legendary’ status. Just a few years later, former Frankie Goes To Hollywood frontman Holly Johnson released “Legendary Children (All Of Them Queer),” a song in which he recites the names of famous gay men, including Warhol, beckoning listeners to add their own to this hall of fame.
While much has changed in the two decades since, I Am A Camera’s “The Legendary Children” serves up a message to those still considered outcasts and misfits by mainstream society: “Your innocence will pull you through when no one else will stand by you.” The song is a much more serious-sounding affair than the sweetly-laced pop of “Factory Boys,” but “The Legendary Children” offers another facet of Ross and Watt’s electropop that’s no less fascinating, especially when paired with their new music video below.
While I Am A Camera’s debut album is still expected this year (as long as it’s out by December 31, they’ve kept their word), the duo is working on a new cover. Sounds like they’re tackling Chase & Status’ new single featuring Louis M^ttrs, “Lost & Not Found.”
