The all-star jam “All Of The Lights” is one of my favorite tracks from Kanye West‘s My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. Now there’s a music video, but what director Hype Williams has served up is heavy on color and flash, but strikingly thin on substance.
The clip starts out promising enough, cast in black and white with the camera focusing on a little girl who lives in the projects. But when the track kicks in, any storyline is chucked out the window, and in rush crazy-bright hues and constantly changing typefaces. According to Stereogum, “All Of The Lights” is Williams’ nod to the title sequence from Enter The Void, but at five minutes long, the same ingredients are migraine-trigger city.
Kanye, Kid Cudi and Rihanna show up to mime their parts in “All Of The Lights,” with the S&M-er’s side-boobs playing a supporting role. The other artists who added to the track’s vocal salad — Fergie, Charlie Wilson, John Legend, Tony Williams, Alicia Keys, La Roux, The-Dream, Ryan Leslie, Alvin Fields, Ken Lewis — are acknowledged via end-credits graphics, though Elton John and Drake are curiously absent from the parade of names.
Borders keeps its shout-out in one of Kanye’s rhymes, though. That kind of neutral-if-not-positive, free publicity is probably looking pretty good to the bankrupt bookstore chain right now:
