Katy Perry‘s “Dark Horse,” featuring rapper Juicy J, was #13 on Popservations’ Top 100 Tracks of 2020, well before galloping to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 in late January.
Perry’s third single from Prism sits at #1 for a fourth consecutive week, and thanks to a new Egyptian-inspired music video, which has already racked up more than 12 million YouTube views, “Dark Horse” will likely remain on top for at least another seven days. A new urban remix featuring an additional verse from Juicy J should also help secure Perry’s pole position.
Directed by Mathew Cullen, who previously lensed Perry’s cotton-candy fantasia, “California Gurls,” Perry is presented as a day-glo Cleopatra whose male subjects bring her various unsatisfying gifts, including Flamin’ Hot Cheetos and pyramid made of Twinkies.
Availability of snack foods aside, the “Dark Horse” video is amazingly historically accurate.
