Video Premiere

Pumped Up Kids

Here on Popservations, Foster The People have had a bit of an “always the bridesmaid, never the bride” situation. The Los Angeles band has rated eight Free Weekend mentions, but beyond those free downloads, they’ve yet to be the subject of a proper post.

That changes today, thanks to Foster The People’s premiere of a music video for “Helena Beat,” the follow-up to their hit-that-just-won’t-quit, “Pumped Up Kicks.” Both songs are from the trio’s debut album, Torches, released in May, one of 2011’s best.

Frontman Mark Foster described the Ace Norton-directed video for “Helena Beat” thusly to MTV News:

“It’s like a short film, really. It’s post-apocalyptic, ‘Lord of the Flies’ meets ‘Mad Max,’ so, it’s a bunch of kids, and they kidnap us and take us into this warehouse, and there’s a really crazy twist at the end. But it’s super-visual, and it’s a mixture of really, like, bizarre circumstances — it’s dark, but it’s also pretty tongue-in-cheek and fun.”

Sounds very much in keeping with the spirit of “Helena Beat,” a song whose breezy charm confounds with a closer look at the lyric sheet: “Yeah, yeah, I’m all right. I took a sip of something poison, but I’ll hold on tight.” Of course, “Pumped Up Kicks” isn’t exactly the feel-good song of the year, either — you know that one’s about school gun violence, right?

“Pumped Up Kicks” has been remixed numerous times, and now “Helena Beat” could very likely top its predecessor, thanks to Foster The People’s new remix contest. Hop to it, you’ve got nothing to lose.
