Little Dragon‘s gig in San Francisco on Saturday night had the sold-out crowd dancing from the start (yours truly included), even if a few of the band’s extended jams did ‘drag on’ a touch too long for my tastes. Still, seeing Yukimi Nagano and her cohorts do their thing live only cemented my belief that Swedes do pop best.
The latest musical export from Sweden, Stockholm duo Icona Pop, lays out that truth in their name and lives up to it. Yesterday, Aino Jawo and Caroline Hjelt released their debut EP, Nights Like This. While it’s no shock that synths form Icona Pop’s beating heart, the four tracks showcase a versatility of moods, from boastful (“Manners”) to bright and shiny (“Lovers And Friends”) to slightly menacing (“Sun Goes Down,” on which they’ve paired up with New York City’s The Knocks). But it’s the EP’s title track, “Nights Like This,” a charmer with a singalong hook and some 8-bit arcade sounds, that really pops.
Icona Pop premiered the music video for “Nights Like This” a few days back. Featuring Jawo and Hjelt on a road trip, the clip is inspired by the B-movie genre mined most famously by Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez’s Grindhouse, complete with missing reels. Caution: If you suffer from even a mild case of misophonia, hearing the girls’ munch away on their nacho platters at 1:22 might be a trigger. Why not listen to the song in its entirety here, instead?
