Fool Me Twice

One of the great shames in recent pop music memory is that “Closer,” the lead single from Tegan and Sara‘s seventh studio album, Heartthrob, didn’t even breach the Billboard Hot 100. As Darren Hayes enthused only today:

Well, the world has a chance to do right by Tegan and Sara with the second single from Heartthrob, “I Was A Fool,” which sports a different tempo (decidedly mid-) and a brilliant Roxette-referencing piano flourish. And the Quin Twins are pulling out all the stops to make sure “Fool” gets a fair shot, serving up two music videos for the single.

The first, which premiered a week ago, is technically a lyric video, though the Travis Hopkins-directed clip transcends that categorization.

Yesterday, the proper music video for “I Was A Fool” arrived, with Tegan and Sara taking to their to their website to share how it came together behind the scenes:

“We chose Shane Drake, who directed Paramore’s ‘Decode’ video and Kelly Clarkson’s ‘Stronger’ video, to bring our vision to life. He is a wonderful director, with a history of making emotionally intense and beautiful videos! He doesn’t disappoint with ‘I Was A Fool!’

The video is a simple look at one person’s journey through the emotions of a break up. We’ve all slalomed through the mass of conflicting feelings post break up before, and with this video we hoped to capture some of the contrasts between resolution and regret that we all experience when we lose love.

Mae Whitman (Parenthood, The Perks Of Being A Wallflower) plays the lead in the video and does a fantastic job reflecting these conflicts throughout her performance in the video. We were thrilled to work with Mae (and not have to act ourselves) and can’t wait for you to fall in love with her and the video!”

Here’s hoping the world falls in love with “I Was A Fool.” And if not, the flawless Heartthrob offers eight more radio-ready hits, like the sublime, chill-inducing “I’m Not Your Hero.”
