Fiona Apple has debuted the music video for “Every Single Night,” the first single from her much-anticipated fourth album, When The Idler Wheel Is Wiser Than The Driver Of The Screw And Whipping Chords Will Serve You More Than Ropes Will Ever Do. Out on June 19, the album is streaming in full at NPR, if you’d like an early listen.
Directed by Joseph Cahill, the oddball clip for “Every Single Night” appears to be driven by the song’s prominent lyric, “I just want to feel everything.” Snails, a octopus, a giant squid, a hula girl dashboard trinket, an alligator, and a minotaur bedmate comprise Apple’s co-stars. Fans of the singer-songwriter’s“Criminal” days will note she does briefly return for a soak in the tub.
What does it all mean? Probably nothing. Just as “Every Single Night” is stubbornly anti-melody, the song’s music video avoids any clear narrative. And lest you think Apple is taking ‘The Art’ much too seriously, her grin at the end should put such conjecture to rest.
