Already a standout from the posthumous Michael Jackson album, Michael, “Hollywood Tonight” has undergone a bit of a tinsel-town makeover for its music-video debut.
The song’s been beefed up with the beat from “Billie Jean” (something Jackson himself had considered when working on the song in 2008), and the spoken bridge from Jackson’s nephew Taryll has been excised, making “Hollywood Tonight” an all-Michael performance.
Of course, producing a video for “Hollywood Tonight” with the King Of Pop proves practically impossible, so the Wayne Isham-directed clip tells the story of an MJ-loving girl (Madonna alum Sofia Boutella) who’s come to L.A. to make her dancing dreams come true. Aspirations alone don’t pay the rent, so stripping and waitressing bring in the Benjamins while she’s “heading for the big time.” The music video wraps with a flashmob of Jackson-inspired moves in front of the Pantages Theatre near Hollywood and Vine.
Far superior to the production that appears on Michael, the remixed single version of “Hollywood Tonight” isn’t yet available in the U.S. for download, with Sony prepping to push another album track, “Behind The Mask,” that dates from the Thriller sessions. Read about plans for that song’s ambitious crowd-sourced video.
