While the #1 reign of Bauuer’s “Harlem Shake” on the Billboard Hot 100 remains big news (especially for the sampled artists looking to get paid), another song fueled by YouTube views is reaching new heights. But this one has been on the ascent for quite a long time.
AWOLNATION’s “Sail,” originally released in 2011, has entered the top 40 in its 26th week on the chart. Billboard credits the move to a fan-created video that has been viewed more than 25 million times (the tally for the band’s official music video is 15 million). The slow climb of “Sail” gives the Aaron Bruno-fronted AWOLNATION one of the seventh longest climbs in Hot 100 history.
“Sail” isn’t going anywhere but up any time soon. Covered last year by Macy Gray, I most recently heard the song soundtracking this demonstration of the Pro Sony camcorder. Sweaty palms ahead for the open-heights averse:
AWOLNATION is currently on an extended tour of the U.S. through April 25, with special guests Blondfire — Popservations’ favorite brother-sister duo — and Mother Mother, and you could grab yourself some seats.
